Moving into the theatre
…Is the perfect way to put it because it quite literally becomes your home for the run of the show. You wouldn’t have a home without a toothbrush or snacks would you? Let’s hope not. Getting prepped with the “essentials” for the theatre before you bump in will be a lifesaver, especially during dreaded tech week. It will make your life easier during the 8 show a week slog and give that little home touch to your space for those moments when you can’t remember the last time you left the place.

Here is your shopping list for the day before tech starts....

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss (and maybe mints)
  • 1x towel for shower (with your name on it) and body wash/soap
  • 1x face towel, Face Halo and cleanser
  • 1x hand towel to lie on the desk for make up and 1x hand towel to dry hands so you don't waste paper towels.
  • Coconut oil to take stubborn make up off or to moisturise your FACE (usually you can’t moisturise your body before a show because it’s dangerous for stage)
  • Snacks: My go to snacks are: nuts, peanut butter, rice crackers, corn chips and some dark chocolate.
  • A book to read between shows or scenes if you have long breaks
  • Phone charger to keep at work… ESSENTIAL!
  • Dressing gown and slippers (Dark colours if you plan on being side stage in it)
  • Butter knife+sharp knife+ fork + spoon and container for food made at work. Side note: Don't take tuna into a communal dressing room... gross.
  • Deodorant! ALSO ESSENTIAL
  • Spare undies and socks
  • Rehearsal/warm up clothes and closed toe warm up shoes
  • Black jacket/dressing gown or black clothes for watching side stage, especially if you’re a swing/understudy
  • Mini rubbish bin for under desk
  • Make-up, hair brush/comb/hair tie and headscarf for keeping hair prep between shows or for warm up.

  • Cup or jar (or old candle jar) for toothbrush/make up brushes etc
  • Lavender oil for calming nerves and relaxing and peppermint oil for headaches and staying alert during matinees
  • “On guard” essential oil to ward off sickness when it strikes the whole building... it'll happen.
  • Yogi throat tea and a tea cup
  • Spikey ball for rolling out sore muscles and Physio Cream/tiger balm/magnesium spray.
  • Panadol and nurofen…. just in case.

  • A few printed photos for put up

  • I like to have some angel cards or quote cards to pull out before each show… each to their own.

  • Notepad and pen.

This should get you started and when you get into the theatre you can suss out if you’ll need any more!
